Out of Old Nova Scotia Kitchens
Preheat oven to 375° F.
½ cup shortening
½ cup butter
1 cup white sugar
1 cup molasses
1 egg
3 tsp. baking soda dissolved in ¾ cup boiling water
1 Tb. vanilla
3-4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ginger
½ tsp cloves
Cream together the shortening, butter and sugar until light.
Blend in the molasses and egg.
Add the baking soda water mixture.
Add vanilla.
Sift together the dry ingredients and add gradually, mixing well to make a soft dough.
Roll out into a ¼” thickness and cut with cookie cutters or roll into balls and flatten on the cookie sheet. (You may need to flour your hands as this dough is sticky. Grease and flour cookie sheet if cookies stick.)
Bake 8-10 minutes.
Makes 6-7 dozen
